A New Ground Plot of the City of Hamburg. (Hamburg - map of the city with two area maps). This is an extremely rare, old colored copper engraved map of Hamburg by Hermann Moll from 1686.

Hamburg - map of the city with two maps of the area. Herman Moll (1654 - 1732) / Philip Lea (1656 - 1780) / Th. (Perfect/ Very good/ Good/ Fair/ Fair/ Poor): In good state of preservation. Overall browned due to age.

Remarks: It is an S. A very rare, old colored map of Hamburg, an early work by Hermann Moll, who went to London as an engraver and geographer in the late 1670s, where he later also worked as a publisher and map dealer. The present plan is based on the Hamburg plan by J. Mejer from Danckwerth's "Newe Landesbeschreibung" from 1651, but has been revised and supplemented by two inset maps showing the Elbe between Lauenburg and its mouth (11 x 34 cm) and the southern area around Hamburg with the Elbe Islands and the Vierlande (14.5 : 22 cm). A legend with 40 entries names the important buildings.

The figurative title cartouche shows the Hamburg coat of arms and gives the publisher's address Vanleys Court in Black fryers, & at ye Sunn, & Bible. & at ye Atlas & Hercules in ye Poultrey. It is supplemented by a dedication cartouche for the Earl of Rochester with figurative accessories. An extremely rare map of Hamburg in original colours.

This is an early work by. Herman Moll from 1686, who moved to London around 1680. The map is based on a map by J. "New Country Description", published in 1651. His map has been modified and extended by two inset maps which show the Elbe river from Hamburg to the mouth (11 x 34 cm). And the surroundings of Hamburg with the southern islands and the "Vierlande" area in the east.

A key names the 40 most important buildings and places. The two figurative cartouches bear two coats of arms and include a dedication to the Earl of Rochester. The map measures 50 x 58 cm (plaze size) and is in good condition.
