Outstanding, rare original woodcut of a Fortune Teller by well-known New Yorker artist Barbara Westman (20th century). Westman studied at the Museum School in Boston and became a noted illustrator, partcularly for the New Yorker. She was married to art critic and philosopher Arthur Danto. Westman has produced a number of covers for the New Yorker (many are available as reproduced prints and posters, and her most famous image, "Girlfriends Cruisin" has been widely reproduced as posters and even a towel). Westman has written and/or illustrated numerous books, including The Bean and the Scene: Drawings of Boston and Cambridge ; A Beacon Hill Christmas ; Beard and the Braid ; My Perfect Neighborhood ; and many others.

Westman's work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Harvard University Art Museum. This rare woodblock by Westman demonstrates her unique and whimsical style (she apparently has produced only a few woodblock prints --- see the MFA Boston collection for an example at the MFA Boston). It is signed lower right and dated 1967. It is titled "The Fortune Tellers' Meeting" lower right and number 3/ (edition size is not indicated). It measures 20" x 19.75" (sight size). It is in very good condition (there are spots on the inside of the glass). Please see my other auctions for more fine paintings and prints. This item is in the category "Art\Art Prints".
